Inverness, Florida – At 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to E. Gospel Island Rd. in Inverness due to a reported fire.

The Engine 5 crew from the Hernando Fire Station arrived first at the location to find a 30- foot by 60-foot barn fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters initiated a defensive fire attack, to protect surrounding property, while a water supply was established.

Crews from four additional fire stations arrived on scene to assist with containing the fire and rotating through mop-up operations until the fire was completely extinguished.

The power was secured at the breaker panel. Water was applied to the fire by 2:07 a.m. The fire was brought under control by 2:13 a.m., and the last unit cleared the scene at 4:05 a.m.

The barn contained a fifth-wheel camper, a farm tractor, a boat, and a four-wheeler, all of which were destroyed in the fire. The barn and its contents were considered a total loss.

The investigation determined that the fire was electrical in nature.

No injuries were reported.

Safety Message

Electrical systems in barns, sheds, and outbuildings should be inspected on a regular basis to prevent fire hazards. Rodents, moisture, and age can damage wiring over time. Always ensure that electrical circuits are properly protected; avoid overloading electrical outlets, and cut the power to unused structures when possible.
