At 6:23 pm, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting that a shooting had just occurred at a residence located in the 3900 block of S. Springbreeze Way in Homosassa.
Deputies arrived at the residence to find the victim, Mrs. Campbell, lying on the patio floor near the swimming pool, with a single gunshot wound to her chest, and Michael Campbell and a male witness sitting at a table near Ms. Campbell's body. On the table near Mr. Campbell was small black firearm, a Springfield Armory 9 millimeter handgun. The report stated that Ms. Campbell was pronounced deceased at 6:37 pm.
According to the witness, the victim and Mr. Campbell have a history of arguing, and earlier that day, the victim had returned home from drinking, behaving in an irrational manner. The witness said that he and Mr. Campbell were consuming alcohol on the patio, and he (the witness) left the patio and went inside the residence to calm the victim, with the intention of preventing future confrontation between the victim and Mr. Campbell.
The witness said, according to the report, that he then returned to the patio and sat at the table with Mr. Campbell, and a short time later, the victim exited the residence, stood directly in front of Mr. Campbell, who was seated, and began loudly cursing at him, at one point stating that she was going to shoot the witness andthen Mr. Campbell - who suddenly shot the victim, once to her chest, which caused her to fall backward onto the patio floor.
The witness stated that he did not see a firearm on the victim's person or nearby, or see the victim reach toward her waistband, pockets or Mr. Campbell, before she was shot.
