Ocala man arrested, accused of shooting Bronson man at a family cookout

Bronson, Florida - On June 26, 2022, the Levy County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) was contacted by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office in Gainesville, Florida, that a man had arrived at a Gainesville hospital emergency room suffering from a gunshot wound that had been inflicted at a Bronson (Levy County), Florida residence. 

Levy County deputies responded to a residence in the University Oaks subdivision of Bronson where the shooting had occurred. According to Lt. Scott Tummond with the Levy County Sheriff's Office, the shooting incident had not been reported to the Levy County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center.

During an investigation, Levy County law enforcement officials learned that the shooting victim had gotten into a heated argument during a family cookout gathering with 23 year-old Quyn Taras Barber of Ocala, Florida, who was armed with a handgun. According to Lt. Tummond, Mr. Barber pointed the weapon at the victim and fired one round, striking the victim, who was transported to and dropped off at the hospital emergency room by a family member. The victim is expected to recover from the injury.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Barber on a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm. Law enforcement officials began searching for Barber, who was located at an apartment buuilding in Ocala, Florida by the Ocala Police Department. He was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail in Ocala, where he is being held on a $450,000 bond. Barber will be transported to the Levy County Detention Bureau in Bronson, Florida and will face trial in Levy County, Florida.
