FAA to Lead Investigation

Inverness, Florida – About 7:16 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue and the Citrus County Sheriff's Office responded to S. Airport Road in Inverness due to a reported plane crash. Reports stated that the airplane crashed into a gate at the Inverness Airport on takeoff.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office secured the area, closing S. Airport Road, from Highway 41 to the entrance of Citrus County Animal Services.

First responders arrived at the location to find a fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft, on a berm, with an active fuel leak. Firefighters shut off the aircraft’s fuel supply, and deployed a hose line for fire protection. Law enforcement officers and fire crews removed the two occupants from the aircraft, despite the challenging terrain and hazards.

The two airplane occupants were transported to area hospitals for medical care; one was flown to a local trauma center, and the other was taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

The scene was turned over to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office at the request of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will conduct the investigation into the incident.

"Citrus County Fire Rescue commends the rapid coordination between fire, EMS, and law enforcement personnel to ensure safety and quick response," said  Cortney Marsh, CCFR Communications Specialist.
