 Lecanto man dies in single-vehicle crash on SR 44 in Sumter County

Lake Panasoffkee, Florida - A 62 year-old man from Lecanto, Florida, died at the scene of a traffic crash that was determined to have been caused by the man having a medical emergency.

The crash occurred at 2:41 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, on State Road 44 in Lake Panasoffkee in Sumter County, Florida.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Toyota Highlander, traveling west on State Road 44, when east of Northwest 33rd Drive, the driver suffered a medical emergency, and his vehicle departed from the roadway, traveled onto a ditch, and then struck a barbed wire fence.  

The driver expired at the scene of the collision, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
