Inverness teen arrested after fiery crash on I-75 that resulted in dealth of one teen and injuries to 4 others

Sumter County, Florida - A 17 year-old Inverness youth, driving a vehicle on Interstate 75 at 2:53 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025, was arrested as the result of a a single-vehicle traffic crash that resulted in the death of one of his passengers and injuries to all the other passengers inside the vehicle, including the driver, himself.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred in thre jsouthbound lanes of Interstate 75 at mile marker 332, north of the Wildwood, Florida exit, and all southbound lanes were closed closed for an unspecified amount of time.

The driver, 17 year-old Dylan Austin Richards, was later arrested by Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers on multiple felony charges that included vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. 

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, Richards was driving a Dodge Charger, recklessly, at a high rate of speed, traveling south on Interstate 75, when he overtook slower traffic and took evasive action to avoid a collision, which resulted in the vehicle entering the outside shoulder of the highway and striking a tree. The vehicle erupted into flames. 

Following the crash, Richards exited the vehicle, removed the license plate from the vehicle, then ran from the area.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies tracked Richards (the driver) to a chicken coop located at 633 NW 111th Lane in Oxford, Florida, where he was taken into custody.  

Richards and his four passengers, all from Inverness, Florida, suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals where a 16 year-old male passenger died from his injuries. One passenger, a 15 year-old male, was seriously injured. Richards, age 17, and two other male passengers, ages 13 and 17, received minor injuries.
