~ Enhanced classification reflects strong fire protection capabilities across Citrus County ~
Citrus County, Florida – On May 20, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue announced, that following a comprehensive evaluation by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), Citrus County has achieved a new Public Protection Classification (PPC) of 3/3Y, effective July 1, 2025.
This improved classification reflects the significant investments made by Citrus County in emergency communications, fire suppression capabilities, staffing, training, and water supply infrastructure. The PPC rating is a critical benchmark used by insurance companies to assess a community’s fire protection services and can directly impact property insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses.
“This new rating is a reflection of the dedication and professionalism of our personnel, and the strong partnerships we maintain with our 9-1-1 communications center and Citrus County Water Resources,” said Citrus County Fire Chief Craig Stevens. “We’re committed to delivering exceptional service to the residents of Citrus County and are proud that this rating recognizes those efforts.”
“This is great news for Team Citrus, and it comes during National EMS Week,” said Citrus County Administrator Steve Howard. “I am both proud of and grateful for the talent and dedication of Citrus County Fire Rescue, and everyone involved in making this happen.”
What does a 3/3Y rating mean?
The first “3” in the designated rating applies to properties located within 5 road miles of a recognized fire station and within 1,000 feet of a creditable water supply (such as a hydrant).
The “3Y” in the rating applies to properties within 5 road miles of a fire station, but beyond 1,000 feet from a water supply.
Both ratings demonstrate a high level of fire protection, with the 3Y classification recognizing communities that have effective firefighting capabilities even in areas without immediate hydrant access.
The ISO evaluates communities on a 100-point scale, assessing four key areas:
• Emergency Communications
• Fire Department Operations and Staffing
• Water Supply Systems
• Community Risk Reduction Efforts
Citrus County earned a total score of 71.19, placing it firmly within the Class 3 range and showcasing the strength of the County’s fire suppression systems.
“This rating is a win for our community,” added Chief Stevens. “Not only does it reflect the capabilities of our fire rescue team, but it also offers the potential for reduced insurance rates for property owners. We encourage residents to contact their insurance providers to determine if they are eligible for savings.”
"Citrus County Fire Rescue thanks all personnel and partner agencies who contributed to this achievement and remains committed to continuous improvement and public safety excellence," said Cortney Marsh, CCFR Communications Specialist.
