Half-acre brush fire on N. Mitchum Pt. in Crystal River damages pickup truck, car and boat

Crystal River (Citrus County), Florida – In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 17, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) responded to a location on N. Mitchum Point in Crystal River due to a report of fire that was initially reported as a possible explosion.
Fire units were dispatched to the location at 12:58 a.m. The first unit arrived on scene at 1:11 a.m. to find approximately a half-acre of brush on fire, with two vehicles and a boat fully engulfed in flames.
Fire suppression operations began immediately, with the use of a hose line to address the vehicle fires. Crews from multiple Citrus County fire stations arrived on scene to assist in extinguishing the vehicle and brush fires. The Florida Forest Service also responded to the location to assist with containment.
Due to the coordinated efforts of Citrus County fire units and the Florida Forest Service, the fire was brought under control and fully extinguished without injuries. Units began clearing the scene after completing overhaul and mop-up operations. The cause of the fire was undetermined at the time of the press release.
The loss of the three vehicles was estimated at $19,500. The vehicles included a 1994 Chevrolet S10 compact pickup truck, a 2011 Nissan Infiniti car, and a 1978 Boston Whaler boat.
Citrus County Fire Rescue urges residents to use caution with outdoor burning and to avoid parking or storing any vehicles in an area with heavy vegetation. With dry conditions and fast-moving fuels, brush fires can quickly spread and become dangerous.
