Homosassa, Florida – At 4:13 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Citrus County Fire Rescue was dispatched to S. Louise Point in Homosassa due to a reported fire.

The first unit arrived at 4:27 p.m. to find a 2,400-square-foot, single-story concrete block home with heavy fire involving approximately 50% of the home. The fire was observed on several sides of the home and through the roof, affecting the garage and kitchen areas.

A vehicle and an enclosed trailer were also on fire.  Three motorcycles, were also damaged or destroyed. The fire had also spread to the south, igniting a grass fire that damaged a section of a neighbor’s fence.

The owners informed first responders that all occupants and pets had safely exited the residence.

An offensive fire attack was initiated and a 360° assessment of the property was conducted. Lines were deployed to the garage and front door, and the ceiling was pulled to prevent spread of the fire into the attic. Numerous fire stations responded to the fire.

The fire was brought under control by 4:55 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:13 p.m. After extensive overhaul and mop-up, the last unit cleared the scene at 7:36 p.m.

Victim advocate services were contacted to assist the displaced occupants and provide victim assistance. Power was secured by the utility company due to a live power line down near the fire area.

The fire caused $150,000 in damages to the home and exposures that includes:
- Main Residence - significant interior and roof damage; loss stopped at 50% involvement.
- 2019 GMC Sierra vehicle — fully involved and destroyed.
- 2004 Covenant enclosed cargo trailer — destroyed.
- 3 Harley-Davidson motorcycles — total loss due to fire damage.
- 12 feet of wooden privacy fence on an adjacent property — damaged by brush fire.

The homeowner informed fire command, that earlier in the day, he'd been woodworking in the carport, using planing equipment powered by extension cords. He said he was cooking inside the home when he noticed the carport fully engulfed with fire that extended into the garage.

The fire was determined to be unintentional and accidental. The Florida State Fire Marshal was consulted by phone and did not respond to the scene.

Citrus County Fire Rescue cautions residents to NEVER use extension cords as a permanent power source for heavy equipment or appliances. Always follow manufacturer instructions, and practice safe usage to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
